How often do you bother to put on sunscreen? If the answer is only when going outside, that is, in fact, the wrong answer. Shining inconspicuously on your skin are the blue light rays being emitted by your digital devices, sometimes for hours without mercy.

This isn't a conspiracy like microwave ovens making food radioactive; blue light is real, damaging, and inescapable in modern life. For anyone chained to a computer or happily nesting indoors, sunscreen with blue light protection is essential. And because I care, I've compiled some of the best formulas available to shield you from it.

So What is Blue Light, Anyway?

Blue light, or high-energy visible light (HEV), is everywhere. We can visualize it best in our blue sky, thanks to nitrogen and oxygen scattering it across the atmosphere.

Blue light's wavelength (380–500 nm) is relatively short, only slightly longer than UVA and UVB waves. The longer the wavelength, the less powerful it is.

Diagram of the light spectrum showing ultraviolet, blue light, visible light, and infrared wavelengths, highlighting blue light between 400–500 nm.

Blue light hasn't been much of a problem for humans until the digital age. Although fluorescent lightbulbs have emitted blue light since their invention in the 1930s, people weren't staring and interacting with them all day at a tiny distance.

Anything with an LED screen emits blue light, meaning your laptop, TV, phone, tablet, etc., are all bombarding you with this seemingly innocuous wavelength. While harmless in small amounts, the average person today is spending 6-8 hours a day in front of screens, and too much of something tends to become a bad thing.[1]

How Blue Light Impacts Your Skin

Similar to UVA and UVB rays, long-term exposure to blue light can cause photoaging and skin cancer; it simply isn't as obvious as getting a sunburn.

Blue light causes oxidative stress, triggering the formation of free radicals (a molecule with an unpaired electron; reactive and unstable),[2] which gradually break down collagen and elastin in skin tissues.

This DNA damage can lead to hyperpigmentation, typically more so in medium-to-deep skin tones. This skin discoloration is more sustained when caused by blue light.

Skin loosens, fine lines and wrinkles develop, and the skin barrier can become dehydrated and more sensitive.[3] All this and yet, most sunscreens only focus on UVA/UVB instead of the full spectrum of light.

Shielding Yourself From Blue Light: The Ingredients That Work

When shopping for blue light protection, skip chemical sunscreens, as they only guard against UVA/UVB. Instead, look for these mineral + antioxidant powerhouses:

  • Iron Oxides - Provides enhanced sun and blue light protection, is non-comedogenic, suitable for sensitive skin, and prevents hyperpigmentation.[4]
  • Zinc Oxide - Protects against melanoma, sunburn, premature aging, and rashes. For the best protection, look for Non-Nano Zinc Oxide.[5]
  • Titanium Dioxide - Provides similar benefits to Zinc Oxide, scattering and reflecting UV rays and blue light by forming a protective barrier on the skin.[6]
  • Antioxidants - Vitamin C, E, B3 (Niacinamide), Green Tea, Ferulic Acid, Beta-Carotene, and Astaxanthin, are all antioxidants that neutralize blue-light induced free radicals.[7]
  • Hyaluronic Acid - Included as a hydrating element, damage to collagen and elastin caused by UV and blue light can be mitigated with this ingredient, which helps skin stretch and flex.[8]

Alright, enough with the boring stuff. Let's get on to my top 8 picks for the best blue light sunscreen.

Best Blue Light Sunscreens To Protect Your Skin

Because Vampires never age, right?

The lightweight lotion helps soften the look of dark spots and fine lines over time while supporting the skin barrier against city life, pollution, and blue light, leaving a soft, non-greasy finish.

While I don't have acne, reviews of this mineral sunscreen say that 86% of those with acne-prone skin find this product suitable for them.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Ultra-Light Face Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50

Best Non-Greasy Formula

La Roche-Posay is a favorite of dermatologists (and yours truly). There's no white cast or greasy feel at all from the line, and as someone with sensory issues, greasiness is a huge problem with most sunscreens I try.

This sunscreen is a weightless, fast-absorbing mineral fluid that delivers broad-spectrum SPF 50 with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, leaving a comfortable matte finish.

Cell-Ox Shield® antioxidant protection and mineral-rich Thermal Spring Water help neutralize free radicals and soothe reactive skin, while the fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formula is tested for even the most sensitive complexions.

Aqualogica Radiance+ Niacinamide SPF 50 Sunscreen

A lightweight, fragrance-free sunscreen that delivers SPF 50 PA+++ broad-spectrum protection outdoors and helps buffer blue light indoors, rated a 5-star Anti-Pollution Factor, guarding against dust, smoke, and city grime.

Vitamin B3 targets the look of spots, watermelon hydrates while regulating excess oil production, and the water-gel texture sinks in fast with no white cast or stickiness—comfortable for normal, oily, dry, and sensitive skin alike.

Also, the scent is so lovely, fruity, and fresh. I don't usually enjoy fragrances in skincare or cosmetics, but this is refreshing without being overwhelming.

colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Face Shield Classic SPF 50

Best Splurge

A weightless, oil-free mineral fluid with 12% zinc oxide that blends sheer for a natural finish while shielding against UVA/UVB, blue light, infrared, and pollution via patented EnviroScreen® Technology.

The hydrating, antioxidant-rich formula is fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, water/sweat resistant for 40 minutes, and comes recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Though the priciest on the list, a little goes a long way, even up to 90 days. When broken down, that becomes $17.30/month! That, plus the quality alone, makes this blue light sunscreen so worth it.

Andalou Naturals Broad Spectrum, Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Best Budget

This lightweight mineral sunscreen uses non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum SPF 30 while hyaluronic acid and bio-designed collagen deliver lasting hydration and a plumper look.

Ectoin adds blue-light and pollution defense, and Andalou’s Fruit Stem Cell Science supports antioxidant care for skin that stays calm, supple, and protected.

It’s dermatologist-tested, Skin Cancer Foundation–recommended, and made with vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free standards, but do note that it contains natural fragrance to create a "Fir Needle, Jasmine, Sage, [and] Tea Tree" scent.

Personally, I like the scent. It's very fresh, and tea tree helps awaken your senses, which is necessary when you've been staring at a screen for far too long.

Even if you don't care about premature aging, preventing skin cancer now can save you a world of pain and a lot of money later in life. It isn't always as easy as getting a mole removed. I've seen a man walk out of a Mohs appointment with a hole in his cheek the size of a baseball due to a lifetime of neglect.

And on that cheery note...My fellow Vamps, slather on your sunscreen, pull those curtains taut, and enjoy your cave-like dwelling knowing you are safe and protected from any wavelength of light that crosses your path.

Stay beautiful, my darklings!
